It’s that time of year where all is merry and bright! However, the holidays can also be a time of stress and chaos. As we gear up for this time of the year, I understand that finances can be tight. 🎶 LET’S TALK ABOUT MUSICALITY 🎶

If you know me, you know that I grew up in a home that was full of music. My dad is a musician and would produce music in his home studio. Because of this, I would constantly hear the isolated tracks of different instruments and voices. When the full product was finished, it was much easier to hear all those isolated tracks and I was fascinated in what it sounded like altogether.

This is some improv that I did after class today. Can you tell when I’m dancing to the percussion? Can you tell when I’m dancing to the bass line? Can you tell when I’m dancing to the vocals? Can you tell when I mix it up? If you’re someone who struggles with improv, I highly recommend listening to a song and “finding an isolated track” as your guideline for your movement. Then try moving to that guideline. You never know what you can create until you try it and let the music take you on the journey!

Every style of dance you learn will benefit your ability to move. Learning some jazz fundamentals will help in precision and clean lines. Ballet can help in finding moments to be graceful and controlled. Hip Hop can help you release tension. Tap can help with musicality and rhythm. The list goes on. Knowing multiple styles will unlock versatility in your movement. Learning new styles, though scary and uncomfortable, can help you to think outside of the box in your dancing. You might not get it the first time and that can be frustrating. But there is beauty in the process if you trust it.
